Concertiade & Soiree Series

Schubert’s Viennese tradition inspired a concert series to awaken the musical heritage of the former Conservatorium of Music and South Brisbane Town Hall.

It was in Oxford in 2002 that Mark established a series of concerts called Concertiades, modeled on the once-famous ‘Schubertiades’ hosted by composer Franz Schubert in Vienna in the early 19th century. Combining a concert and social event was Schubert’s hallmark. In 2008, Mark launched a similar series in Berlin.

And so on to Brisbane. Inspired by the restoration of the ‘The Chambers’ at Somerville House, back to the former glory of the South Brisbane Town Hall, Mark imagined how wonderful it would be to play there again, having performed there often as a student of the ‘Con’, when the Conservatorium of Brisbane occupied that building.

What was originally conceived as a once-off ‘coming home’ concert has since developed into Brisbane’s own Concertiade series, thanks to the support of Somerville House.

The inaugural Concertiade was held in March 2013, and continues today, with four Concertiade concerts held annually featuring solo performances from Mark and other noted classical musicians, alongside performances showcasing the musical talent of students from Somerville House.

The Soiree Series consists of private lectures / concerts held in private homes. The 2018 series featured five Soirees exploring the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century and Impressionistic Music and periods. In 2019, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert will be presented with a combination of explanation and performance.
